 Zur konventionellen Duckmäuserei gegenüber einem Iängst überfälligen Bayreuth- Establishment und seiner connection am Beispiel des Richard Wagner Verbandes Hamburg 

ein Protokoll für Leser in – und außerhalb Deutschlands von Gottfried Wagner 

Brief- und Telephonauszuge mit dem Werner Hahn [WH] 1. Vorsitzenden des Richard Wagner Verbandes Hamburg [RWVH] und dem Politologen und Wagnerianer Prof. Dr. Udo Bermbach [UB], Universität Hamburg mit Dr. Ralph Giordano [RG] und Dr. Gottfried Wagner [GW] 

– Klappentext aus dem Vorvort von RG zu GWs Autobiographischen Aufzeichnungen” Wer nicht mit dem Wolf heult” : “Aus der Familie der Schlußstrichzieher ist nun einer gefährlich ausgebrochen und reibt sich an der beleidigten Kulturgroßmacht Bayreuth. Was Gottfried Wagner dazu treibt, ist die Verweigerung, die finstere Clanliaison mit den Primartätern des Holocaust und ein Sympathisantentum weit über dessen feiges Ende hinaus zu ‘verschweigen.” 

– Briefauszug vom 16.8.97 von WH: “Unser Ortsverband möchte sich gründlich mit den Fragen auseinandersetzen, die der Wagner- Urenkel in seinem Buch angeschnitten hat [ … ] Herr Bermbach wäre gerne bereit, mit Ihnen, sehr geehrter Herr Giordano, Fragen zu diskutieren, die das Buch von Gottfried Wagner aufwerfen”. 

– Telephonat am 30.8.97 von GW mitWH. GWs mündliche Zusage zur Teilnahme einer gemein-samen Veranstaltung unter der Voraussetzung, daß diese dem Inhalt der Autobiographie (Klappentextes) entsprechen wird. 

– schriftliche Zusage GW vom 9.9.97, mit Hinweis auf das Telephonat vom 30.8.97 u.a. wie folgt : ” Auf die möglichen Konsequenzen für lhren Verband, die sich aus der Veranstaltung mit uns [RG und GW] ergeben könnten, weise ich noch einmal hin.” 

‘~Briefauszug WH RWVH vom 25.9.97 an RG: 

” Herr [ Gottfried ] Wagner hatte mir sowohl telephonisch wie schriftlich mitgeteilt, daß durch unsere Veranstaltung mit möglichen Konsequenzen seitens Bayreuth zu rechnen sei. Die fürchte ich nun wirklich nicht, wollte aber abwarten, wie Herr Bermbach die Sache sehe. [ darin auch : Vorschlag der Veranstaltung fur den Januar 98] 

– Brief vom 17.11.97 von WH an RG: Terminfestlegung für den 20.1.98 

– RG Briefvom 22.11.97: “Der Titel der Veranstaltung am 20.1.1998 sollte identisch sein mit dem Obertitel des Buches von GW, also “Wer nicht mit dem Wolf heult”: ein Untertitel mit Hinweis-und Erklärungs-funktion müßte noch gefunden werden. (Urenkel Richard Wagners, Fehde mit Bayreuth)” 

– Briefauszug WH vom 23.11.97 an RG: “ lch habe mit Herrn Bermbach über Ihren Titelvorschlag ge-sprochen, und wir und wir waren beide der Meinung, daß der Buchtitel “Wer nicht mit dem Wolf” heult”sich für die geplante Veranstaltung insofern nicht gut eignet, als er Erwartungen wecken könnte, 2 

die wir erfüllen werden. Es soll doch auf keinen FaIl die Familiengeschichte, die einen wesentlichen Teil des Buches ausmacht und eine sehr persönliche Sache ist, thematisiert werden, sondern Themen, die sich einer Nachprüfung an Quellen nicht entziehen und die auch im Buche eine zentrale Rolle spielen, und das wäre doch vor allem das Thema Antisemitismus. Herrn Bermbach hat folgende Vorschlag: Richard Wagner: Antisemitismus in Werk und Wirkung. “ 

– Briefauszug RG vom 22.11.97 22.11.97] an WH : 

“Ihrem Fax von heute [23.11.97] entnehme ich, daß Sie bei der geplanten “‘Veranstaltung vom 20.1.1998 von anderen Voraussetzungen ausgegangen sind als ich und, da bin ich sicher, auch Gottfried Wagner: Sie wollen die Familiengeschlchte, und damit die akute Auseinandersetzung zwischen Gottfried Wagner und Bayreuth, also die Seele des Buches, sein Herzstück, ausklammern, und damit den prärsenten Konflikt, der die Initialzündung des Werkes war. Dieser Versuch, die Rolle Bayreuths vor 1933 und nach 1945 bis in die Gegenwart zu unterschlagen und das Thema historiographisch auf die Vergangenheit, also Richard Wagners Antisemtismus zu reduzieren, wird von mir dem Paten des Buches und sozusagen seinem Ideenvater, nicht mitgemacht – und, da bin ich wieder sicher, – von Gottfried Wagner auch nicht. Ihre Haltung ordne ich ein unter die sattsam bekannte Verweigerung einer ehrlichen Auseinandersetzung mit der unsaglichen, von Gottfried “‘Wagner in seinem Buch reich dokumentierten und bis heute streng durchgehaltenen Verdrängung der Verstrickung Bayreuths in den vorstaatlichen ( Winifred Wagner !) und dann nach 1933 auch dem staatlich instituierten Nationalsozialismus. Haben Sie wirklich geglaubt [ … ] daß Gottfried Wagner und ich zur Kontinuität dieser schmählichen Wahrheitsverweigerung beitragen würden, indem wir auf Ihre ” Verkürzung” des Themas eingegangen wären, das heiligt, das Kernstück des Buches hätten unter Quarantane stellen lassen ? Dann hatte Sie, wahrlich, der “Stoß” von Buch und Vorwort nicht getroffen. “ [ … ] Fazit: Ich ziehe hiermit meine Zusage zu der Veranstaltung des [RWVH] am 20.1.98 zurück und würde diese Entscheidung – vielleicht – dann korrigieren, wenn Sie das mit der Ihren tun, das heißt am 20.Januar über jedes Thema des Buches gesprochen werden kann. Das “Vielleicht ” steht da, weil ich nicht weiß, ob ich die Kränkung verwinden kann, die Sie mir und , da bin ich mir zum drittenmal sicher, auch Gottfried Wagner zugefügt haben mit der Annahme, wir könnten auf Ihr Programm eingehen.” 

– Brief WH vom 25.11.97 wiederholt seine Position vom 23.11.97 

– 30.11.97 RG Bestätigung Absage. – 

– 27.12.1997 Absage GW, nach Anfertigung des obigen Protokoll 

” What a mistake” [RG, 23.11.97] 

27.02.1998 GW nach intensiven Austausch gibt Ralph Giordano mit Nachdruck , die Weitergabe dieses Protokolles frei und steht voll dahinter und hinter meiner Arbeit. 3

– excerpts of letters and telephone exchanges with Werner Hahn [WH], 1st Chairman of the Richard Wagner Verband Hamburg [RWVH] and the political scientist and Wagnerian Prof. Dr. med. Udo Bermbach [UB], University of Hamburg with Dr. Ralph Giordano [RG] and Dr. Gottfried Wagner [GW] 

– jacket text from the foreword by RG on GW’s autobiographical notes “He who doesn’t howl with the wolf”: “There has been a dangerous breakout from the family famous for its refusal to confront its past. The escapee takes issue with the offended cultural super power of Bayreuth. What drives Gottfried Wagner is his refusal to remain silent about the sinister clan liaison which continues to conceal their links with the primary perpetrators of the Ho1ocaust and their sympathy for them long after the cowardly end of the era… “ 

– Letter excerpt from 16.8.97 from WH: “Our local committee would like to deal thoroughly with the questions which the Wagner great-grandson touched upon in his book […] Mr Bermbach would be glad to discuss questions with you, dear Mr Giordano, which are raised in Gottfried Wagner’s book. “ 

– Telephone call on 30.8.97 between GW and WH. GW’s verbal agreement to attend a joint event provided that it is relevant to the contents of the autobiography (jacket text). 

– Written confirmation from GW dated 9.9.97, with reference to the telephone call of 30.8.97 including as follows: “Let me point out the possible consequences for your federation which could result from the event with us [RG and GW]”. 

– Letter from WH, RWVH dated 25.9.97 to RG: “Mr. [Gottfried] Wagner informed me both by telephone and in writing that our event might lead to possible consequences from Bayreuth, which I really do not fear, but wanted to wait and see how Mr Bermbach saw the matter. (included is a proposal for the event on January 98] 

-Letter dated 17.11.97 from WH to RG: date set for 20.1.98 

RG letter dated 22.11.97: “The title of the event on 20.1.98 should be identical to the title of Gottfried Wagner’s book : “He who doesn’t howl with the wolf”. An explanatory subtitle pointing out the content should be included. (Possibly “Richard Wagner’s great-grandson and his feud with Bayreuth”?) 

-Letter excerpt dated 23.11.97 from WH to RG: 4 

“I spoke with Mr Bermbach about your title suggestion, and we were both of the opinion that the book title “He who doesn’t howl with the wolf ” is not suitable for the planned event, because it could raise expectations about what we are going to fufil. By no means should the family history be dealt with, which is a significant part of the book and a very personal matter. We should rather address other topics that also play a central role in the book whose sources can be verified, first and foremost the topic of antisemitism. Mr. Bermbach has the following title suggestion: “Richard Wagner: Antisemitism in Work and Effect.” 

– Letter excerpt from RG to WH dated 22.11.97 

“From your fax of today [23.11.97] I gather that your assumptions about the planned event on 20.1.1998 are completely different from mine, and I am sure, Gottfried Wagner’s: You wish to exclude the family history, and with that the acute conflict between Gottfried Wagner and Bayreuth, that is, cut out the heart and soul of the book, the very issue that was the initial spark of the work. I, as the godfather of this book and its provider of ideas, cannot support this attempt to suppress the role of Bayreuth before 1933 and from 1945 up to the present, thus reducing the content historiographically to the past, that is to say focusing exclusively on Richard Wagner’s antisemitism. Once again I am sure I speak for Gottfried Wagner also. I classify your attitude as one which is so well-known: a refusal to undertake an honest analysis of Bayreuth’s involvement und its unspeakable repression, both in the prestate phase (Winifred Wagner!) and after 1933 during state institutionalized National Socialism up to now, all of which Gottfried Wagner richly documented in his book. Did you really believe that […] Gottfried Wagner and I would contribute to the continuity of this shameful denial of truth by agreeing with your “shortening” of the theme that would have been tantamount to putting the core of the book in quarantine? If so, it is obvious that you were not at all impacted by the message of the book and its foreword. […] My conclusion: I hereby withdraw my pledge to take part in the event of [RWVH] on January 20, 1998 and would only perhaps change that decision, should you change your mind, allowing all topics of the book to be discussed on 20. January. I say perhaps, because I do not know if I can get over the fact that you insulted me by assuming that I would accept your programme. Once again, I am sure I speak for Gottfried Wagner also.” 

– Letter WH dated 25.11.97 repeats his position of 23.11.97 

– 30.11.97 RG confirmation of cancellation. – 

– 27.12.1997 cancellation GW, after writing the protocol set out above 

“What a mistake” [RG, 23.11.97] 

27.02.1998 GW after an intensive exchange with Ralph Giordano, RG emphatically agrees with the release of this protocol and states that he is fully behind it and behind my work.
